Back in 1925, this iconic stone was immortalized by Thomas Peter Randulff, a bank manager and keen member of the local trekking association. Kjeragbolten is a five-cubic-meter boulder wedged in a crevice nearly 984 meters (3,228 ft) above Lysefjorden, drawing thousands of visitors from all over the world each year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_4 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module et_pb_text_align_center\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\" data-et-mv-hidden-tablet=\"true\" data-et-mv-hidden-phone=\"true\"><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But did you know that <strong data-start=\"539\" data-end=\"554\">Nesatindane<\/strong>, just a few hundred meters from Kjeragbolten, was the original destination for many of the earliest visitors? For those traveling by boat on the Lysefjord, the mighty Kjerag massif\u2014often referred to as the \u201cMajesty of the Lysefjord\u201d\u2014was the main attraction at the innermost part of the fjord. Standing atop the dramatic landscape at Nesatindane, visitors enjoyed spectacular panoramic views over the Lysefjord. The name Kjerag (originally \u201cKiragg\u201d) is said to stem from the small streams tumbling down the cliff face, which resemble the scruffy hair of a young goat when the waterfall disperses.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1628\" data-end=\"1991\">During Norway\u2019s nation-building era in the 19th century\u2014often called the Romantic period\u2014artists and writers portrayed Kjerag and Lysefjorden as dramatic landscapes brimming with both aesthetic and mystical value. One of the earliest artistic depictions is a painting by Lehmann from the early 1820s. In 1866, the French author Victor Hugo wrote of Lysefjorden:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cLysefjorden is the most terrifying of all the sea\u2019s corridor-like cliffs. (\u2026) At times one hears thunder without a cloud in the sky; a beam of light bursts from the cliff face at a thousand or fifteen hundred feet above the sea. Randulff, an avid hiker and member of the Stavanger Trekking Association, had already helped putting Preikestolen on the map about 25 years earlier.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2927\" data-end=\"3318\">In the early 1900s, he was a driving force behind plans for a tourist road that would connect Lysebotn to Telemark\u2014a project he believed would open the region to an entirely new kind of tourism. Though it was never realized due to funding and political challenges, his visions and his work establishing trails and hiking cabins in the area laid the groundwork for future tourism development.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3320\" data-end=\"3826\" data-is-last-node=\"\">He discovered the boulder during a family trip in 1925, describing it as a \u201csmall pea\u201d wedged in a crack some 700 meters (2,300 ft) above the fjord. The photograph\u2014showing his brother Bernhard Randulff and a local guide\u2014was published in the Stavanger Trekking Association\u2019s yearbook that same year, sparking interest in Kjeragbolten among local mountain enthusiasts. Later, in 1984, <strong data-start=\"344\" data-end=\"357\">Lysevegen<\/strong> was opened as part of the Tjodan power plant project. In the summer of 1980, four climbers\u2014Mike Blenkinsop, Richard Thomas, Nils Engelstad, and Bjarne Schmidt\u2014achieved the first recorded ascent of Kjerag. Today, there are well over 30 established routes on Kjerag, each at least 500 meters high. The best climbing season is July and August.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"481\" data-end=\"1010\">Organized tourism took off in the late 1980s. After seeing Randulff\u2019s 1925 photograph, <strong data-start=\"568\" data-end=\"589\">Kjell Helle Olsen<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"594\" data-end=\"610\">Leif Solheim<\/strong> from the Stavanger Trekking Association headed to Kjerag and \u201crediscovered\u201d Kjeragbolten. In 1990, a photo of Leif standing on the boulder appeared as a centerfold in the outdoor magazine <em data-start=\"799\" data-end=\"815\">Fjell og Vidde<\/em>, capturing attention worldwide. The Stavanger Trekking Association soon built and marked a new trail to the Kjerag massif, Nesatindane, and Kjeragbolten, and visitors began flocking to the area.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1012\" data-end=\"1358\" data-is-last-node=\"\">Thanks to its towering cliffs and dramatic drop-offs, Kjerag also emerged as a premier spot for BASE jumpers, attracting adrenaline seekers from across the globe. Kjerag quickly gained a reputation as one of the world\u2019s premier destinations for BASE jumping, thanks to its spectacular and challenging vertical cliffs. Despite the risks of the sport, BASE jumping\u2014especially the legendary annual event known as \u201cHeliboogi\u201d\u2014has helped put Kjerag firmly on the international map.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"466\" data-end=\"827\">A local legend claims that a massive rockslide from the Kjerag massif created <strong data-start=\"544\" data-end=\"558\">Geitaneset<\/strong>, a point of land jutting into the fjord at the foot of the mountain. took charge of parking, facilities, and visitor information\u2014work that was later continued by Lysefjorden Utvikling in 2005. In 2003, <strong data-start=\"1867\" data-end=\"1885\">Frafjordheiane<\/strong> was designated a protected landscape area, and its managing body, SVR, identified Kjerag as a crucial gateway. The <strong data-start=\"2001\" data-end=\"2035\">Stavanger Trekking Association<\/strong> is responsible for maintaining the trail to ensure safe travel and minimize erosion. Over the years, the trail has undergone multiple upgrades, including the addition of stone steps built by Sherpas from Nepal.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2248\" data-end=\"2612\">In 2020, Kjerag became one of the first hiking destinations in Norway to earn the<strong data-start=\"2326\" data-end=\"2352\">\u00a0Norwegian Scenic Hike<\/strong>\u00a0status, with support from the Norwegian Environment Agency.
